Telepresence is reshaping the world of telecoferencing, with a real time rendering hard to match.

Telepresence is a group of technologies aimed at connecting people far apart instantly with a superbly real time rendering. It brings the concept of a video conference forward, revolutionizing interaction.

What’s the trend?

According to Frost & Sullivan Telepresence will grow immensely through 2013 due to the use of new technologies and the need to be connected with colleagues, partners and customers in an instant offering a great human interaction.

Who offers it?

There are several corporations inn the market such a Cisco, Hewlett-Packard (Halo), Telanetix (Video Telepresence), Polycom or Sony (3D Telepresence). Since the need of connectivity keeps growing constantly several organizations like Marriott and Starwood hotels have already made partnership with vendors to improve their business offering.

    Kena:

Would you consider Skype a telepresence technology?

I've participated as a virtual attendee in an unconference in California. I was sitting at my home in Dallas, TX, USA at my desk interacting with other attendees located onsite in the San Francisco venue. The speaker used Skype to broadcast her presentation from New Zealand as it was projected on a screen in a the meeting venue. It was an interesting experience and we all felt connected in a unique way even though several of us were thousands of miles apart from each other.

I think telepresence technology provides another great opportunity and a new avenue for meeting and event organizers to consider when planning their meetings. It will be interesting to see if and how the meetings industry adopts this new technology into their conferences and events.

    Hi Jeff,

I think Skype is video conferencing. Since you were using your camera from your computer, even though you were able to see everyone on the screen, what Telepresence offers is big screens in order to be able to see other people life size, so you can see their body language and even have eye contact with a group of people at the same time.

A few hotel chains are implementing this kind of technology, Marriott hotels will have it in some of their venues by October this year. And I really think that with all these benefits, mainly being able to see the other person so realistic will make trust grow faster among people and use it more for corporate business, affecting eventually the travel industry.

Lets see how meeting industry adopts it as you said.

    Thank for you input!

    Hi Kena,

When I think of Telepresence, I think of this video by CISCO, where they had the speaker walk on stage from 14K miles away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcfNC_x0VvE

Having said that I can see how the CISCO and SONY technologies would be a huge benefit to corporate meetings that are between 10 and 60 people in size. Rather than flying this people around Europe or the US for a 1/2 day meeting, they can all just go to their local Mariott or Starwood without having to travel. You would still get to see a life sized person, read non-verbal cues, etc. So, I think it would really work for these smaller meetings.

Like JeffHurt, I too have attended events and meetings using Skype to connect everyone virtually. It was great for many reasons… especially that Skype is usually free. I can see how using telepresence technology instead of Skype would have improved those events in a variety of ways, but are the improvements worth the cost? I guess that depends on the budgets of the organizations that are participating in the event.
