Like JeffHurt, I too have attended events and meetings using Skype to connect everyone virtually. It was great for many reasons... especially that Skype is usually free. I can see how using telepresence technology instead of Skype would have improved those events in a variety of ways, but are the improvements worth the cost? I guess that depends on the budgets of the organizations that are participating in the event.

Hi Kena,

When I think of Telepresence, I think of this video by CISCO, where they had the speaker walk on stage from 14K miles away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcfNC_x0VvE

Having said that I can see how the CISCO and SONY technologies would be a huge benefit to corporate meetings that are between 10 and 60 people in size. Rather than flying this people around Europe or the US for a 1/2 day meeting, they can all just go to their local Mariott or Starwood without having to travel. You would still get to see a life sized person, read non-verbal cues, etc. So, I think it would really work for these smaller meetings.

I work in the promotional products industry, and I can tell you for a fact that telepresence will become huge within the next several years. I've seen a few businesses already testing it out. I think it will become popular for planning trade shows as well. I recently read a few blog posts about the future of virtual trade shows...and learned a little about trade shows avatars. It's pretty interesting and for anyone interested, you can find the article here: http://trade-show-promotion.blogspot.com/

Hi Jeff,

I think Skype is video conferencing. Since you were using your camera from your computer, even though you were able to see everyone on the screen, what Telepresence offers is big screens in order to be able to see other people life size, so you can see their body language and even have eye contact with a group of people at the same time.

A few hotel chains are implementing this kind of technology, Marriott hotels will have it in some of their venues by October this year. And I really think that with all these benefits, mainly being able to see the other person so realistic will make trust grow faster among people and use it more for corporate business, affecting eventually the travel industry.

Lets see how meeting industry adopts it as you said.

Thank for you input!
