It's vital that any 'external' team-building events relate to the context of the team in it's workplace.

It's not enough (though valuable it is) to 'have fun'.

Individuals whop fail to link the activity to the real-world will end up confused.

Regards

True I would also enable them to step up and introduce themselves in a free discussion. To me that is the best way to tailor activities afterwords.

I believe that its very important to know details about people when it comes to motivating them. Every person can respond differently to motivational tactics

I agree, you need to be specific when you are motivating people.

Thanks for the comment

We used to organise teambuilding activities in-house a few years ago as part of our service. However we eventually decided that it was better have utilise the services of companies that specialised only in this niche, therfore having a much better system in place for manageing events etc.

Great post

Another aspect of a successful team building exercise is that it must be inclusive, especially if you have a few quiet or shy people in the team.

It is so easy for them to be left out or left on the fringes of the exercise while the more vocal people are charging around (and often doing it wrongly).

Nice blog and whilst I agree with the majority of it, it's very hard not to prejudge when someone first joins your business and really don't seem to have much intelligence.

Self motivation is also very important, but I find rather than having to motivate people - you work with people who are already motivated, and keep them motivated!
