What Social Media for my event?

March 3, 2009   |   AUTHOR: Julius Solaris   |   POSTED IN: event planning 2.0

It’s the buzzword of the day, Social Media. Does it make sense to use it for your event? Here is what you need to know about time and budget required.

We had a great web conference (aka conversation) last night about the use of technology within events. It is recorded in the Event Manager Blog Channel for your use. We were overwhelmed with questions and we are looking forward to answering them on next events.

A graph to sum it up

The highlight of the night was a graph outlining the time and budget required to do both: promoting your event on Social Media and embedding social media and extra technology to events.

Here it is:

picture-1

We are so proud of this graph, really. It sums up tons of information coming from top new media sources and our hands on experience with events.

How to interpret the graph?

Easy peasy Japanese.

On the axis you have Budget levels and on the series the amount of time required to be effective.

A bit of a paradox on the time line. YouTube videos take a longer time to produce than a tweat on Twitter – yet YouTube is a faster way to promote. Is that because a Twitter following takes longer to build?

That’s a very good question Brian.

    I’ll compare twitter to Youtube.

twitter is extremely cheap to set up but it has shortcomings in terms of the time required to build an effective followers base. That can of course happen overnight, but specially on the promotional side it demands a lot of analysis and relationship building skills.

On the other hand, Youtube is relatively simple. A well conceived video makes a difference. No relationships in there, just a viral attractor of traffic. Budget should be low to preserve the user generated component and the effort is only one way->to the audience.

What I am trying to highlight is the co-creation that goes into the tool. Those requiring more time. demand more interaction.

I will follow up with a more explicative post.
