How to Tweet From an Event [Infographic]

This is a short article with some tips to tweet from events and a nice infographic.


I'll keep it short and sweet. I wanted to direct you to this infographic I found on Slideshare from Adam Kolburn of Social@Ogilvy with some basic tips for tweeting at events.

It is very simple (maybe too simple) but that is the beauty of it. It is a great share with your attendees specially if they are approaching event tweeting for the first time.

A Few More Tips

As I am fresh from my experience at #IMEX13, I thought to share a few myself:

- Bring a battery back up for your phone. This article can help.

- Do not wait till the day of the event to get tweeting, the best networking is done before the event starts when it is quieter. That is when the early adopters gather.

- Quality over Quantity. I kind of disagree with number 3 on the infographic (although it is a good tip for noobs) as there should be a lot of attention to quality. You don't want to be caught #twomiting.

- Join a tweetup or start one. Tweetups are amazing, it's always good to mingle with other tweeps.

In Conclusion

I believe this is a good basis of tips to share with your attendees.

This content is strategic to educate your attendees to use social media at events correctly. There is a substantial opportunity to leverage user generated content.

  • Nothing more to add I believe. I guess what someone should add to this is to engage and response to at least all tweeps who interact with you.

    I’d add it’s a good idea to let your followers know that your tweets for the duration will be event-related so those not interested in that event can temporarily tune you out.

      This is a really, really important tip, because you can irritate your twitter followers if you don’t let them know beforehand. So, yeah, it’s always smart to let people know that you’ll be tweeting about a specific event and be tweeting more often than you normally do.

    I agree on the fact that step 3 isn’t the best thing you can tell people who attend your event. The quality of tweets will drop a lot when you ask them to tweet as much as possible. Step 4 on the other hand would be really interesting. Pictures tell so much more then just random phrases. It makes it also more attractive for people who are not there to follow your event.
    I found this post really interesting and will certainly keep this schedule in mind for future events.

  • Great find, Julius! And ‘#twomiting’ had me cracking up! But, yes. If you’re going to live tweet from an event, twomiting is definitely not a good idea. Also, if somebody comments or asks a question on one of your tweets- replying is a good idea. Some live tweet, but don’t bother to actually engage with anybody through it all.

  • It’s always unfortunate when people tweet at shows and forget the # – it’s a built in audience! The tech space has a lot of #twomiting but outside of it, in the b2b space, very few people tweet or have twitter accounts (personal or professional). We need to figure out how to unlock that potential and get them more involved.

      • I like that term “qualitative quantity.” It will exist when the expos push it as the thought leaders for their industries. More social content will facilitate leads and more sales.
