Events can be seen as small projects, one-off activities conceived to meet the needs of a particular group.

As for projects events have specific performance requirements, which means that they need to be delivered on time and within specific budget boundaries.

In this view, events could be seen as a series of tasks that need to be completed in a chronological sequence.

These tasks or packages could be organized in a method called Work Breakdown Structure.

According to the complexity of the event you need to manage you might consider adopting a WBS. Most of the time for small conferences and meeting it helps a lot to map the processes, assign tasks and control the timing of the event.

Contact me if you want more info on how to apply a WBS to your event.
